The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
